You know I thought that I would join this group to get some feedback from others (especially women/mothers),,,,but also men regarding having gaps on resume due to tragedies in your life. Why in this American culture do we always have to make things all so politically correct.
I surely know the line about "I took some time off to care for my children".......BUT, what if the reality is:
I went through a nasty nasty divorce where I almost lost custody, did lose our home however. ALL WHILE trying to return to school. How about losing a sibling to suicide during divorce.....what about dealing with an extremely nasty teenage girl who created a nightmare of legal problems with Child Protective services because she did not want to listen and be disciplined by mom (the now single Mom). So I apologize, but not really as to some of the real life horrors that people can face that causes them to lose focus on career, to the point of not even being able to work.
I am therefore forced (due to this roller coaster ride) to rely on old job descriptions and positions on resume. The last job I had was 4 years ago. However, I have quite a bit of experience in a medical/technical field. I have had interviews (4 with same company). But, due to competition....I was not called back.
I have made a very strong decision to return to finish my degree (in a medical/technical field). My choice from years ago, but never had the support. HUH....but I knew that if I had continued, I would not be sitting here writing this now. See, I am 51 yrs old.....AND I certainly feel that in my younger years no one cared about HOW I WAS GOING TO MAKE A LIVING. CAN YOU ACTUALLY IMAGINE A FAMILY THAT DID NOT ENCOURAGE THEIR DAUGHTER TO GO INTO MEDICINE.....?
Well enough for now, just want to engage others that may be going back to school....facing age issues and resume gaps. Thank you.
