Career Q&A: What should I ask during the job interview?

BOULDER, Colo. — Boulder's Liz Ryan is a former Fortune 500 human-resources executive, a syndicated columnist and a career adviser. Each week, she'll dish out job-hunting advice for college students.

Q: What are some good questions to ask my prospective boss at a job interview?

A: Here are a few: What are the most important things you want the new person to accomplish in the first three months on the job? What are some of your favorite attributes in a team member? What is likely to be the biggest challenge for the person coming into this job?

It is also nice to ask your prospective boss to tell you about his or her career, so far. Most people like to talk about themselves!

Q: I don't know if I want to get into sales or marketing when I graduate. Do I need a separate resume for each function?

A: Probably not, because whatever sales or marketing experience you've had so far is going to help you as you pursue jobs in both directions.

Later in your career, you may have two or three or more resumes, but for now, you should be OK with just one, as long as your job-search "prongs" are so close together.

Q: When is the best time in a job interview process to ask about the possiblity of working from home?

A: A second interview is a great time for that question. If there's no second interview, you'll have to broach the topic when you get a job offer.

Keep in mind that lots of companies don't have anyone working from home. Others will allow some at-home work over time, but not when a person is new on the job.
