Ask Liz Ryan HR: Human Resources for the new millennium

Dear Liz,

I heard from a friend about a job at a local company, and the job sounded perfect for me. I was writing a cover letter to the head of Engineering when I got a call from a headhunter about the job. Turns out the same friend who told me about the job had gotten the headhunter's call, and he referred the search guy to me.

I talked with the search fellow about the job for twenty minutes and he said it sounded like a good fit. So I sent him my resume and waited a week and didn't hear anything, so I called him back. He said the job spec wasn't a good fit for me after all and that the employer had told him specifically not to send over any resumes without a few specific skills listed in the job ad. I didn't have those specific skills so he told me he's not forwarding my resume.

Fair enough. However, I believe I can get an interview if I write to the hiring manager directly, and I have the guy's name, and I have the cover letter written. Is there any reason I shouldn't end-run the headhunter?

Thanks,

Frank
